Light, sweet crude for October delivery fell 46 cents to $69.80 a barrel in midday trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude for October delivery on London's ICE Futures exchange fell 32 cents to $69.93 a barrel.
Supply concerns were tempered after BP PLC hinted that oil production at Prudhoe Bay could be restored to normal levels earlier than expected.
In other Nymex prices, gasoline futures fell 2.06 cents to $1.7625 a gallon while heating oil fell 2.21 cents to $1.989 a gallon. Natural gas futures dropped nearly 9 cents to $5.96 per 1,000 cubic feet.
