In the week ending Aug. 25, the nation's commercial crude oil reserves rose by 2.4 million barrels to 332.8 million, according to the weekly report. Analysts had been expecting a decline of 1.5 million barrels.
Gasoline supplies climbed up 400,000 barrels last week to 206.2 million, compared with a drop of 600,000 barrels expected by analysts.
Stockpiles of distillates, used for heating oil and diesel fuel, also advanced 1.3 million barrels to 136.8 million. That was in line with forecasts.
The figures for the commercial crude oil inventories do not include the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which currently holds crude oil of about 700 million barrels of crude oil.
